In this piece, I wanted to create an environment that would let the trio interact with each other in a very natural way, similar to how a jazz ensemble might function.  I also wanted the piece to take advantage of the trio’s familiarity with each other’s personalities and playing styles.  The underlying harmonies, several of which are derived from John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, which the title alludes to, as well as the riffing and soloing on the top, and the constant groove and angular rhythmic accents all contribute to its playful nature.
